Shorts spotlight: Sterling Hallard Bright Drake

by Richard

Synopsis: Through the process of challenging the old maxim “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” Sterling Hallard Bright Drake parses the line between truth and memory in solving the mysteries surrounding one of the world’s most notorious and talked about tombstones.

Our Recommendation: This short 15 minute documentary begins with an image of a strange tombstone, and somehow gets even more strange after that. It unfolds like a mystery, and the answers become more fascinating than the questions we have about the man named Sterling Hallard Bright Drake.

Local Spotlight: Pillow Girl

by Richard

Synopsis: A short that combines traditional film techniques with pulp imagery and experimental music.

Our Recommendation: There’s something strangely hypnotic about this short piece. We love its simplicity, and the way it directs your attention on “Pillow Girl” as she morphs in and out of different time periods, adventures, positions of dominance, positions of submission, crossing time and space in the covers of various pulp novels and magazines.

Shorts Spotlight: Killer Kart

by Richard

Synopsis: The shopping cart. Four wheels, one basket, and tonight, for the closing crew of a small-town grocery store, a blood-splattered aluminum nightmare.

Our Recommendation: It takes a fun approach to the slasher, turning a shopping cart into an evil, relentless killing machine. A clever blend of humor, gore, and scares await those who dare to watch it.

Documentary Spotlight: 78 Days

by Richard

Synopsis: In the independent documentary “78 Days”, veteran tree planter, Jason Nardella, follows a reforestation working the northern Alberta swamplands and dealing with a never-ending contract. Veteran planters candidly share their experiences as we watch them struggle through each day of what has become the longest and most difficult season in the company’s 20-year history.

Festivus Recommendation: This documentary looks at a unique lifestyle that seems fun. You get paid well, and enjoy the outdoors for a summer. What’s not to like? Filmmaker Jason Nardella takes a personal, honest approach to his subject that reveals the harsh realities of what 78 days means in the Canadian wilderness. If you crack out here, you’re going to crack in the middle of nowhere with people just as anxious to get out as you are.

Who the #!%@…

by Richard

…Watches your movies??

Festivus Film Junkie

Meet JUSTIN. He’s one of the #!%@s who watches your movies.

1) Without getting too specific in case we alienate some filmmakers, what did you like about a favorite film you’ve seen so far?

Justin: The common thread among all of my favorites so far is the importance of the story, and how it can often eclipse the shortcomings of an otherwise “average film”.

2) How long have you been volunteering for Festivus?

This year will be my my second volunteering, and my fourth year in attendance.

3) What kind of film related activities are you involved in outside of the fest?

I’m currently putting the finishing touches on my first short film “Mine to Keep” and we are about to finish a music video for one of the musical artists who contributed to our film’s soundtrack. My team will soon be partnering up with an established local web series to guest write and direct an episode for their second season, eventually leading to our first feature length film.
