Filmmaker Interview: Ronnie Cramer

by Richard

Meet Ronnie Cramer, an experimental filmmaker who will be screening Pillow Girl which you can read about here.

1) What is the origin for the idea behind Pillow Girl?

There was an invitational exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the theme of which was “risque.” At the time I was using various methods to convert pictures into sound, so I made a “musical” album using the covers of lurid magazines for source material. When it came time to include a visual component, I used the covers themselves. Cutting between them proved rather boring, so I tried dissolving and finally morphing.

2) How long have you been making experimental films?

I was making experimental films in the early 1980s, which came in very handy because I was also in a rock band at that time and music videos were starting to catch on. Adding a bunch of weird visuals to our (weird) music was a natural.

3) Are there any experimental filmmakers you like to keep an eye on who interest you?

Not really. Experimental filmmakers (including yours truly) are usually pretty annoying.

4) Describe a typical day in the life of Ronnie Cramer.

I try to get four or five tasks completed from my “to do” list while adding six or eight more.

Shorts spotlight: Incident on Highway 73

by Richard

Synopsis: On Christmas eve 2005, Jeff and Kelly took a trip through the desert and mysteriously disappeared. This is the account of their final hours.

Our Recommendation: It seems only terrible things happen in the desert. One of the worst fears for travelers is getting stranded. In this short getting stranded would be a wonderful alternative to what happens. Masterfully suspenseful, this short builds and builds until its creepy conclusion.

Our Recommendation: This film challenged us to eat a meal afterwards. And we mean that as a compliment.

Shorts spotlight: The First Hope

by Richard

Synopsis: After seeing Leia kiss Luke on his VHS copy of “Empire Strikes Back,” a young boy unwittingly develops an inappropriate crush of his own.

Our Recommendation: If you grew up loving Star Wars and the Princess Leia/Luke Skywalker romance weirded you out too, you’ll enjoy this film about unrequited love. It’s also a beautiful love letter to the Amblin/80′s Speilberg era of filmmaking.
