Aaron Cole: Best. Casting. Ever.
According to reports from IFC.com Sacha Baron Cohen (from such titles as “The Jolley Boys Last Stand,” and a couple others I can’t remember) wants to play Freddy Mercury for an upcoming bye-oh pic. Better still, it was Borat’s idea.
Peter Morgan (“The Last King of Scotland,” and “Frost/Nixon”) is working his way through the first draft right now and told IFC.com all about it.
If you’re expecting Borat with a debilitating, deadly disease, you might be disappointed.
From IFC.com:
“Sacha was the one who asked me to write it. He was the guy who rang me up,” Morgan explained about how the project was initiated. He went on to discuss the film’s time frame and how the film will focus more on the music and less on the personal tragedy. “I didn’t want to write an AIDS movie, to be honest with you,” Morgan admitted. “And then, I just looked the period — It’s sort of where he rejects [the other members of Queen] and comes back to them.”
This is brilliant. Pure, plain and simple for three reasons.
1) Sacha Baron Cohen might be the most underrated actors in the world right now because most people think he’s good for fart jokes and gross-out humor. Don’t think Johnny Knoxville, think Bill Murray.
2)
Peter Morgan has British historical films on lock.
3)
Sacha Baron Cohen is the only man on the planet capable of growing Mercury’s stache.
